Haha! I like the idea of being on a ‘mission’ in science! It makes me feel like I’m a secret agent! I feel lucky to have been on some great adventures through working in science. One in particular was many months spent travelling to small villages high in the mountains of Ethiopia to look for diseases in the chickens that villagers kept in their back yards. Our team had to walk long distances in the mountains, without any maps, but with the help of local people, to find houses that kept chickens. With the help of lots of village children, we would catch the chickens so we could examine them, but this was really difficult, as the chickens run really fast! What made it a really hard mission is that by the end, we had examined 1300 chickens in 640 houses!

The hardest thing I’ve ever done for science was wake up at 4am in the morning to take a train to another city! We visited 4 schools and I spoke to 8 classes in a single day all over the city. To make matters worse, I also had to carry around a really heavy life-size skeleton model! The students really loved it in the end, though – so I suppose it’s all worth it!

Sometimes having to take trips to museums around the world to look at their bones can be a lot of hard work too. I have to bring all sorts of equipment to another country, and work all day long so that I make sure I’m not wasting my time and money going all that way! I always think to myself one day, I’m going to forget something really important… like my passport, or money!

      Hi!

We see every visit to the beach as a mission to complete! Some times the beaches are really big, and our equipment is really heavy to carry. But we work in a team to make sure we get the job done. There is lots of walking but you are at the beach so it feels like you are on holiday!
We have to work when the tide is out too to collect as much information as possible! So we have to be off the beach before the tide comes in! That makes us have to work quickly sometimes!

I also think this mission to win the I’m a scientist has been pretty hard too! I have been tested by some amazing questions, and have enjoyed explaining what I do! I have also learnt to type a lot faster to make sure I can answer everyones questions before the time runs out!

      Lauren 😀
