Gosh, this is a very big question! There are so many serious diseases out there that affect so many animals and people.. I think the answer will have changed over the centuries, but certainly one of the very worst disease risks to man at the moment has to be the Ebola Virus. You may have seen on the news about how this virus has spread through Central and West Africa and beyond, infecting nearly 30,000 people and sadly killing over half of those infected. Hopefully, the outbreak over the last 2 years is now under control, and through the rapid response of many hundreds of specially trained health workers and researchers, many lives were saved and we know know a lot more about how this virus spreads between people.

Over the centuries, there have been even more terrible epidemics (massive outbreaks of disease) that have affected many many people, and in times where we didn’t have the medicines we have today. Have a read about diseases like smallpox (which we have totally eradicated now!), plague and the Spanish Flu, which killed millions of people in times gone by.
