      Hey!

A storm is made by the weather. We get cold air and warm air above us and when these areas meet, they don’t get along! They make wind and rain, and sometimes fast wind and rain and then a storm happens. When the wind blows over the sea, it makes it move more, and waves are made. If the storm keeps going and going, these waves get bigger and bigger and spread out, hitting our coastline.
The biggest one I researched was the ‘North Sea Flood’ in 1953 which killed 300 people! This storm was made by the warm and cold air hitting each other over the North Sea, which made the waves really high in the sea (over 5m higher than normal), and these spread out and hit all of the east coast of England. The people who lived on the coast didn’t think it would be so bad, and many were asleep when the waves hit. We now measure the waves and make sure everyone knows if a storm is coming so that nobody dies.

      Hope that helps! Lauren 😀
