Great question Holly! You may be surprised to know that often dogs do not show symptoms if they have tapeworms! There are different types of tapeworms but none of them typically make a dog ill, unless the dog really has loads of them. The most common thing we see is parts of the worm, which are full of eggs, called ‘proglottids’ being passed in the poo, or around the dog’s bottom. These can look like little grains of rice almost!
The particular tapeworm that I study, called Echinococcus, is so tiny that you normally don’t see it at all. However, it can infect other species, including humans, and unlike the dog, it can make us very ill indeed. This is why it is so important to make sure that our pet dogs are wormed regularly.
