When you do science this happens all the time. Science is all about problem solving so you can be asked to do something new but you can work it out based on all the science that you have learnt. That’s why you learn science from a young age as it will help you as you grow up!
Although I have looked at over 5,000 skeletons in the last 7 years, I still manage to be surprised by my own work and the research done by other scientists almost on a weekly basis. This is probably because human behaviour is so interesting and diverse throughout human history and throughout the globe.
People in the past with come up with all sorts of ways to find food, organise their societies, take care of their families, fight wars with each other, and to explore uninhabited territories. All of these ideas and innovations of the past show up as a clear story in the bones I study – and history is so vast, I don’t think I’ll ever be ‘used to’ the field of science I do!
